Your vehicles air conditioning system is formed by a closed circuit of pipes & hoses connecting the various components, with a central compressor circulating the refrigerant through the system. The compressor significantly increases the temperature of the refrigerant before it passes to a condenser under high pressure to shed heat & condense from a gas to liquid.

From the condenser, the refrigerant travels to a receiver drier, which filters out moisture & other contaminants before progressing to a thermo expansion valve or fixed orifice tube. The pressure drops as it enters the evaporator as the process of evaporation changes its state back to gas from liquid. Like the condenser, the evaporator is a large surface area heat exchanger, which distributes the cold from evaporation to the surrounding area before the ‘conditioned air’ is blown into the cabin.

Our technicians are specialists professionally trained to diagnose air conditioning faults, carry out air conditioning repairs & recharge your vehicles air conditioning system. It is recommended that you recharge your air-con system with gas & lubricant every two years to keep it running efficiently. Rest assured that we always adhere to manufacturers specifications including recommended capacities & installing the highest quality lubricants. Trust in our technicians, trust in Philips Garage - we are located centrally within Glasgow, situated in the Gallowgate beside the Glasgow Pram Centre.

Why do our technicians flush the air conditioning system?

(i) To perform properly, the air conditioning system must be clinically clean inside the loop.

Refrigerant & lubricant working in high temperatures & pressures as well as components with precise mechanisms, must be clean to ensure optimal operation. Impurities, refrigerant & oil contaminants or improper use of additives can quickly cause clogs in the thin system channels eg. receiver dryer, condenser tubes, expansion devices & compressors' ECV/MCV valves. This will lead to a decrease in the systems performance & will cause serious & costly component damage.

Whenever the system, has been diagnosed with clogs, stoppages, received dryer failures, excessive or such as UV dye or stop leak agents, it is highly recommended to perform a system flush.

(ii) Lubrication is absolutely crucial for the compressors vitality. Precise mechanical parts of the compressor's inner mechanisms are designed to work in a tight fit, with a thin lubricating oil film on the surface enabling them to work properly & avoid seizing in high temperatures.

The only way to ensure the proper volume of lubricant in the system during a service cycle is flushing & filling an empty system with the right type & volume of oil.

What possible contaminants must be flushed out of the air conditioning system?

Carbonized oil particles - a side effect of oil exposed to excessively high operating temperatures

Elastomer (rubber) particles - arisng due to aggressive acids causing the porosity of rubber parts

Moisture - caused by leakages, improper or insufficient vacuum & improper or low quality additives

Metal slivers / chips - typically in case of compressor seizure & metal parts abrasion

Aggressive acids - as a result of chemical reaction between moisture & refrigerant / oil or wrong oil mixtures

Various particles - sludge or soiling compounds created by wrong use or low quality additives such as stop leak agents, UV dye or wrong / different oil   mixture composites

Rest assured that we always adhere to manufacturers specifications including recommended capacities & installing the highest quality lubricants.

Ask about our anti bacterial air conditioning treatment

Your air conditioning unit is subject to the accumulation of bacteria and dirt - our anti-bacterial treatment will cleanse your air con system of odours, bacteria & irritations, improving the air quality, eliminating odours & leaving a healthier environment. Often in winter months motorists think air conditioning systems are surpless to requirements and do not use the air conditioning system to effectively demist their windows, thinking the blowers are superior - long periods of non use can encourage bacteria, mould and fungi build up causing unpleasant odours. As well as providing comfort inside the vehicle cab during the hot summer months, the air conditioning feature can also be used to demist your windscreen in the winter. Air conditioning systems create dry warm air that is quicker and more efficient in clearing your windscreen than regular blowers.

Breathe easier with our anti bacterial air conditioning treatment

Your air conditioning unit is subject to the accumulation of bacteria and dirt - our anti-bacterial treatment will cleanse your air con system of odours, bacteria & irritations, improving the air quality, eliminating odours & leaving a healthier environment. Often in winter months motorists think air conditioning systems are surpless to requirements and do not use the air conditioning system to effectively demist their windows, thinking the blowers are superior - long periods of non use can encourage bacteria, mould and fungi build up causing unpleasant odours.

Whether you are using your vehicle heater or air conditioning, condensation builds up in the system due to dark, damp and warm conditions becoming a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, mould and fungi.

When the heater of air conditioning is switched on bacteria is drawn through the vehicle's air vents and can cause; unpleasant odours, irritation of the eyes, infections, sore  throats and allergic reactions.

Our anti bacterial air conditioning treatment kills bacteria in the air conditioning system and on internal cabin surfaces within the vehicle. In addition to killing 99.9% bacteria that effects your health, it removes bad odours, removes nicotine and vaping odours, improves air quality leaving a pleasant, gentle and fresh aroma. Furthermore, it prevents bacteria build up and odours returning for at least six months.

what's included in our air conditioning services?

Did you know that you should use your air conditioning system in the winter too? One of the purposes of your air conditioning system is to provide dry air - fog happens when water condenses on the window in the winter, the most efficient way to clear your screen is to keep your vehicle's temperature setting to hot and turn on the air conditioning allowing your air conditioning system to act like a dehumidifier. Additionally, your vehicle's air conditioning system is filled with parts that were made to move, prolonged periods of non use may allow components such as the air conditioning compressor clutch to become seized.
